Wow! We are incredibly proud of our junior squash programme and celebrated all their achievements with a Summer Fun tournament at the end of the summer season, with all the children being treated to an ice-cream …. Oh and a medal & certificate (but if we are honest, the ice-cream meant the most to them!).

The aim of our Squash junior coaching programme and Squash Camps, is that all the children have fun, make friends and progress in a sport that will help them get fit and keep healthy. Their progress is tracked through Junior Progress awards from ‘Off the Wall Squash’.
There are 8 levels of award, where children learn basic hand-eye co-ordination skills, spatial awareness, rackets skills and learn the game of squash to be able to play games all while having fun. These skills not only help their fitness but also builds confidence and helps forge friendships which we see carried over outside of the squash courts.
Kate Corey shares here experience of the benefits squash has brought to her and her family.
If someone would have told me 2 years ago that not only, would I be a “squash mom” of 2 kids but I myself would be playing the sport I think I would have laughed out loud, yet here I am! Squash was never a sport I ever dreamt my kids would love, I shamefully admit that I held the belief that it was only played by middle aged men, but the WOW Squash Academy at WLTSC has firmly changed my viewpoint on this.
My children 13 and 8 have been playing now for 2 years, with my eldest son competing at county level. The experience of playing at other clubs with different juniors has not only really helped James’ squash skills but has also benefited his social skills. He has made such good progress he was very kindly invited to join the adult mix ins at the club on a Friday night. The members have all been so welcoming to him and playing with adults has made all the difference to his game and his confidence. It’s so lovely that the club members are so supportive of the juniors and the experience and knowledge they share is just invaluable.
Within the safe environment of the club my children have found a sport they both adore with the bonus of a whole new friendship network. The regular free taster sessions aimed at parents were precisely the reason I also tried the sport and, like my children, got bitten by the squash bug! I strongly believe in this “digital” age we live in that its more important than ever that children keep active and healthy, physically and mentally, through sports and if we can do this together as a family then that’s even better!
As well as the juniors, the parents have been trying out Racketball and some, seeing the benefits membership of WLTSC has for families, are joining themselves, helping create lasting family memories of shared activities that mean so much. Our new Sunday Family squash mix-in on Sunday morning, is a great time to create those family memories!
If you would like to be part of our Junior squash programme led by Mike Harris, Head of Squash & Racketball and the junior coaching team, get in touch, we would love to hear more laughter and see more skills and confidence growing at the squash courts.

Squash – An Exciting Game For All
Squash has been really buoyant down at the courts – leagues are being played, competitions entered and hotly contested, friendlies are competitively played, mix-ins and courses are well attended and the matches are fiercely battled. We now have 5 teams in the Shropshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire leagues, playing a great standard of squash and giving lots of our club players the opportunity to play different teams from across the various counties.
What a hive of activity, and this is just the adults!
The junior scene is also picking up and we have a wonderful group of budding youngsters taking the courts by storm. The junior coaching sessions are well attended and good fun, with 5 sessions over the week welcoming juniors from 6-15years, we’re getting some great advancement in squash ability. So much so, that some of our youngsters took part in Staffordshire Junior County Closed Championships, with great results! In addition, some of our junior players are competing in one of our Shropshire teams and already notching up some fantastic wins and building their confidence. Half term holiday camps are introducing more children to squash too, so there is an opportunity for all juniors to try out squash.
After the success of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Wolverhampton Roadshow that took place here in July, Mike Harris is developing a Squash outreach programme with local schools across Wolverhampton. Delivering both curriculum term time activities and ‘After School Clubs’, with 4 schools, we are #takingsquashtothepeople
External tournaments bring in players who benefit from using our 6 squash courts and great club facilities. We regularly welcome RAF squash players, run a Tri-service Competition (Army, Navy & RAF) hold England Squash Junior Bronze events and most recently, welcomed 190 England Squash Masters players from all over the UK and even Sweden! Many of our members entered with varying results but both of our coaches reached their age category final with these words from tournament chair, summarising how lucky we are to have these amazing players as our coaches.
Men’s Over 50: Yorkshire’s Matt Stephenson was top seed here having won the previous event. An interesting semi as multiple Champion Eammon Price (HFD) dropped down an age group to compete. Stephenson proved too strong, however and won 3/1 to book his final with the local professional Mike Harris (SPE) himself a three times Champion. A very good crowd were there to watch the local hero in action, but Stephenson rocketed through from 2/1 down to take the match in five and his third Regional title.
Men’s Over 40: Darren Lewis (LEC) is a former professional player and seems to have more talent than is fair. He plays a beautiful game with some shots that are breath-taking. County teammate Paul Stroud is also a very fine player and he reached the final with 3/2 wins over England players Keith Timms (HFD) and Tony Webb (SRY). Some great squash but Lewis, with three British Opens is one of the best Masters players ever and in spite of a 15/13 second game, Lewis took his eighth Regional. If he keeps playing, he could win 50!
Masters feedback
“Thank you for providing an excellent venue and fantastic support from you and your team over the weekend. You have set a new gold standard as a benchmark in the level of support and professionalism provided to us and that all clubs need to aspire to at our England Squash Masters Events.”
The Squash year finished with our Carver Cup tournament where members, old & new, competed with various handicaps as their starting point. This tournament has been kindly sponsored by Carvers and the cup presented by Henry Carver to all our winners.
So if you are looking to try squash out for the first time or already play and are looking to join a vibrant club, please get in touch with us, we would love to welcome you.

Regional Masters Squash Tournament is a hit for players
Squash players from across the country gathered at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis & Squash Club (WLTSC) last weekend to take part in a masters competition.
WOLVERHAMPTON JONATHAN HIPKISS 06/11/2022. Regional Masters Squash Tournament at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis & Squash Club.
Pictured L/R Neil Patel (Over 50s plate winner), Jane Hatton (Over 60s 5th place) and Mike Harris (Over 50s runner up) all from Wolverhampton.
The tournament ran for three days, with the finals across a variety of age groups on Sunday, November 6.
The event comes after the success of team England on the international stage at the Commonwealth Games, where they won five medals, and now WLTSC hosted this regional tournament to give players from different backgrounds the opportunity to play competitive squash.
The age categories ranged between 35-75 for men and 30-60 for women.
Helen Tottey, director of squash and racketball at WLTSC, said the competition was a ‘great success and added that the standard of the play was ‘very competitive’.
She said: “We were really pleased to host such a prestigious event at WLTSC.
“It was a great success with very competitive squash games.
“There were 190 entrants, and 15 of our own members enjoyed playing in the competition, and many more enjoyed watching on.
“Our aim is to help promote the benefits of squash from all levels and this event showed how competitive squash can be enjoyed up to 70+ years.
“We were really pleased to have both of our squash coaches reach their respective age category finals.
“Darren Lewis won the over 40s category 3-0 and Mike Harris, unfortunately, lost 2-3 in the over 50s, but it was a great game.”
